Description:

Cornalees Visitor CentreThe traditional slate roofed visitor centre is located on the west side of Loch Thom in the hills south of Greenock at the top of Shielhill Glen. The site provides access to great walks and a nature trail in the Glen.

There is excellent access to the Greenock Cut (5.5 mile aqueduct, and designated ancient monument) for a great reasonably level circular walking route with fantastic panoramic views of the Clyde and islands.

The Countryside Rangers run a schools programme plus family friendly events usually during the school holidays as well as host exhibitions and displays throughout the year.


Walks:

From the Visitor Centre there are signposted walks and trails that vary in length from the 300m (20 Mins) special need friendly mini trail or the 2.5km (1.5 hour) nature trail. Pick up a leaflet at the centre, or contact us and we’ll send you one.

Cycles:

From the Paisley and Clyde Railway Path (Paisley to Gourock) (www.sustrans.org.uk) one can branch off just north of Kilmacolm. Take minor roads and rough tracks along the Gryfe Water and past the Gryfe Reservoirs to reach Loch Thom. Cycle round the south side of Loch Thom to reach the Visitor Centre continue to Greenock using the Overton Track or cycle down to Inverkip or use the single track Brisbane Glen road to Largs.


Fishing:

Ardgowan Fishery is stocked mainly with rainbow trout and operates independently of the Regional Park on the 37 acre compensation reservoir beside the Visitor Centre. Contact them (www.trout-fishery.co.uk) for more information.

A permit is required to fish on Loch Thom, contact the local angling club for details.

Toilets still open most days

OS Landranger 63 NS 247721

Road:

Off A78, follow brown signs for Cornalees north of Inverkip or south of Greenock. From B7054 in Greenock follow signs for scenic route and take the Old Largs Road up hill onto a single track moorland road.

Train:

Nearest Station Inverkip 3 miles. Wemyss Bay line from Glasgow Central. Or Overton Station in Greenock and walk the Greenock Cut. www.firstscotrail.co.uk

Bus:

Citylink passes road end 3 miles away or local bus to Overton and walk the Greenock Cut (6.5km) or Overton Track (4 km).
